Our Sincere thanks to everyone who supported the “Motown Night” in aid of Jack and Jill which raised a wonderful €2,200. Special Thanks goes to Paul Davis who organised this event and made it the wonderful success it was! Everyone danced the night away until the early hours and according to Paul “went home with a smile on their faces”.

School recycles to obtain Interactive White Board

Children from Swords Educate Together with new Interactive White Board

 On Monday 25th May Swords Educate Together National School was the first school to receive an Interactive White Board for collecting mobile phones.
The school collected 623 phones and Principal Gerard Kelly said

 ” The delivery and installation of our first interactive whiteboard for mobile phones is a source of wonderful excitement for children and staff in Swords Educate Together National School. We have been collecting mobile phones for the Jack and Jill Foundation  and the benefits for all concerned are enormous, not least dramatically increasing the number of interactive whiteboards in our school. ”

Life Cycle 2009

Life Cycle 2009

On Saturday23rd May 2009, the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club hosted an event in aid of Jack and Jill which included a  20 km cycle, 10 km run, and 5km walk all of which started simultaneously. This was be followed by an Evening Function with a BBQ and music. 

A large amount of money in excess of €40,00 (final figure to be confirmed )was raised for Jack and Jill.

Sams Lunch in the Four Seasons Hotel

Baby Sam was guest of honour at his own lunch in aid of Jack and Jill in May 2008. Sadly the little man passed away some five weeks later. His parents were determined to continue his fundraising work and the now annual, Sam’s Lunch was held in the the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin on the 8th May 2009. Over 150 people attended the event with famous guests such as Bertie Ahern and Brendan Grace

A fabulous afternoon was had by all with good food, wine and entertainment. Our thanks to Jo Synott and John Nolan (Sam’s Parents) who did a fantastic job organising the event.

On the 24th February 2009, New Zeland based,Starship Foundation launched its new mobile phone appeal in Auckland to raise funds for sick children. The Starship initiative is based on the Jack & Jill model of recycling in Ireland which is done with recycling partner Folamh and has raised nearly €2 million over the past two years for home respite care for Jack and Jill Families. The mobile phones donated in New Zealand will be sent to Folamh in Ireland for recording, grading and storage before being sent to countries such as Hong Kong, China or Eastern Europe where they are checked, reprogrammed, repackaged and sold. Folamh will donate 60% of proceeds from the sale of phones to Starship.

Speaking at the launch in Auckland, New Zeland , Jonathan Irwin, CEO and founder of the Jack & Jill Foundation said, “We are delighted with the number of people in Ireland who support our campaign and I’ve come to the launch in New Zealand to support the wonderful Starship team and I urge every New Zealander to donate their old phones to help the Starship children. I have seen first hand what a big difference it makes in the lives of sick children and their families in Ireland, with 250 phones buying home nursing care for a sick child for one month.”

According to Andrew Young, CEO of Starship Foundation, “More than three million people have a mobile phone in New Zealand and they upgrade these, on average, once every 18 months. That means more than two million phones could become obsolete or no longer in use every year. We want those phones so they can be put to good use for Starship kids. The money raised will be used to pay for priority needs at Starship such as lifesaving equipment through to vital paediatric research. But beyond that, there’s the added benefit of preventing these old phones from ending up in landfill and polluting the environment.”

Andrew Rynne has written a book titled “The Caragh Orphanage”. This book is priced at €5 and is available at all good bookshops. We are delighted and grateful that a donation from each sale will come to The Foundation.

PARENT, Gina O’Grady took it upon herself to approach Glounaguillagh National School with an idea to raise some money by getting the pupils to make their own Christmas cards.
Splash printing of Killarney scanned and printed the pictures onto cards and they were then sold in packs of 7 for €5 each.
Local businesses in Killorglin covered the printing cost’s which allowed for all the funds raised by the pupils cards to go directly to the Jack and Jill Foundation. €1,190 was raised altogether and Gina presented the cheque to Jonathan Irwin, Jack and Jill CEO, on Wednesday, March 11.

They are very pleased with their achievement and hope to repeat the experience next Christmas. “This year was a learning curve for doing it,” says Gina “and we sold about 1,800 cards altogether and we are very grateful to local businesses for covering the printing costs.”

Partnership with the Ritz Carlton Resort Hotel

The Foundation is delighted to announce that it has entered into a partnership with the Ritz Carlton Resort Hotel, at Powerscourt, Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow. This hotel which offers facilities in line with the groups International reputation lies 30 mins from the city centre
of Dublin in the beautiful foothills of the Wicklow mountains.

The Foundation will host both its Golf Classic on 4th July 2009 and its Winter Ball on 12th December 2009 at the hotel.

Special rates are offered to all the Foundations sponsors, friends and families.

The foundation are also delighted that one of their sponsors de Jager – the leading bulb company in England are donating 50,000 tulip bulbs and 25,000 tubers to be planted within the hotel grounds over the next five years in memory of Jack Irwin and all the babies and families the
foundation has cared for since 1997. This will allow the hotel to stage two major flower festivals each year from 2010 onwards. www.ritzcarlton.com
