The Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and as part of the Senior Management Team, the Head of Finance will be a strategic leader for the charity and a critical support to the Board and its sub-committees.
The Head of Finance will directly lead the Finance team, as well as leading, inspiring and empowering the organisation to ensure high-performance, effective governance and sustainable financial growth to underpin the achievement of the charity’s mission.
The Head of Finance is responsible for the preparation of the management accounts and will be responsible for managing compliance to a comprehensive set of controls and budgets.
The successful candidate will work closely with other colleagues and provide financial support and leadership at all levels.
The Person
The ideal candidate for this position will be a goal-oriented finance leader, with strong commercial acumen. They will demonstrate a collaborative approach to leadership, with a high degree of emotional intelligence. Most importantly they will be committed to the charity’s mission and driven to improve the lives of the children we care for.
Membership of a recognised professional accountancy body is required, in addition to a primary level degree qualification in a relevant discipline. Two plus years, post qualification experience, in a busy finance department with people management experience also required.
The Responsibilities
Key Duties
- End to End management of month end accounts processes ensuring timely closure of books, with accurate reporting and analysis.
- Management of outsourced full monthly payroll process and employee benefits programmes.
- Year-end audit including preparation of Statutory Accounts and coordination with external and internal auditors.
- Identifying and developing new funding opportunities with Senior Management Team and helping to draft grant funding applications.
- Oversee grant management and reporting, maintaining excellent relationships with funders.
- Support the CEO in fundraising ventures and representing the charity and our work as appropriate.
- Assist the CEO in compiling annual budget, based on Strategy 2027 and drop-down annual plans from nursing, retail, fundraising and communications.
- Work with the management team to compile the annual report.
- Contribute to communications, charity stakeholder groups and wider audiences.
Strategy Implementation and Evaluation
- Work with the CEO, Board and Senior Management Team (SMT) to deliver the operational plan and develop effective sustainable growth strategies.
- Work with the CEO, Board and SMT to anticipate and monitor risk, putting mitigation measures in place as appropriate.
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with families, staff and wider stakeholders.
- Create effective measurement tools to gauge the efficiency and effectiveness of internal and external processes.
Finance Operations
- Develop and implement with the CEO an annual operations plan and budget.
- Line manage a small team, ensuring accountability and team success.
- Conduct staff performance reviews and co-design individual development plans, as necessary.
- Oversee recruitment and onboarding requirements as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with legal and other reporting requirements.
- Prepare reports and updates to the Board, funders and others as necessary.
